Inflammation is sneaky, and treating inflammation in your body can be hard work - especially since you cannot always immediately see or feel its harmful effects.
Dr. Gena Chiropractic provides chiropractic care in Plantation to people of all ages, and can almost always tell when inflammation is to blame for something that isn’t quite feeling “right.”
“Inflammation doesn't have to be this big reaction we have to something (like an allergy when someone needs Benadryl). Many things that we use in our daily lives are irritants, causing low grade inflammation, ” - Dr. Gena says.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: If I don’t feel it affecting me in the moment, and it doesn’t seem like anything is bothering me, why should I take inflammation so seriously?
Because inflammation is serious. Very serious.
Inflammation is caused by the chemical and physiological responses of the body as it tries to heal or protect itself from damage or a potential threat. The purpose of inflammation is to remove cells that have been damaged or infected, along with pathogens, irritants, and allergens, all of which could do harm.
Also according to Dr. Gena, “The problem is that if we don't pay close attention to the subtle clues our bodies give, we can easily ignore and end up missing this and continue to use the harmful products or eat the bad-for-us-foods, until one day, that long term inflammation in the body, turns into a diagnosable disease. Many things can be inflammatory from our household products, laden with chemicals to the dairy, wheat, and many other foods we may love. Your skin is your largest organ, yet often time people apply lotions or use soaps that are not the cleanest/best for us. On a day to day basis it's no big deal. The problem is that over time, this stuff becomes a cumulative problem, where the body never gets the chance to rest and properly heal.”
Here are Dr. Gena Chiropractic’s top tips for reducing inflammation and staying healthy!
Watch your diet
Diet is everything when it comes to reducing inflammation in the body. Certain foods we eat can trigger inflammatory responses in our bodies, making us feel out of whack and just a little “off.” To avoid this, make sure you steer clear or limit your intake of:
Red and processed meats
Deep fried foods
Sodas and artificial sweeteners
But just as quickly as food can cause harmful inflammation, certain foods can help you heal from inflammation as well! Make sure to incorporate these foods into your diet to feel the anti-inflammatory effects they bring:
Olive oils and other heart-healthy fats
Green leafy veggies
Nuts like almonds, walnuts and cashews
Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines and mackarel
Fruits such as berries and oranges
Is there anything water can’t fix? Probably, but that’s not the point here. Staying hydrated is key to helping you reduce inflammation. On a daily basis, our bodies are bombarded with inflammatory triggers from both the environment and what we ingest. Regularly flushing these toxins out means hydrating well in order to keep your bowels moving and your bodies free of any inflammatory induced trouble.
Move your body
Ever notice that when you sit for too long or avoid your regular gym routine for an extended period of time, your body just feels stiff? That’s because when you’re not moving, your blood doesn’t circulate as optimally as it should which becomes an inflammation trigger - affecting joints, especially. One powerful strategy to improve circulation of blood and lymph is rebounding. This simply means moving your body consistently for ten minutes, whether on a treadmill, with a jump rope, or even on a trampoline, to get your circulation pumping again.
And of course, regular visits to your favorite Fort Lauderdale chiropractor will have you feeling on top of the world. Remember, your health is in your hands, but our hands are here to help.
